Herepai Hut
Sunday 13 July 2025
Conrad, Geraldine, Josh, Monty, Nathan and Christine.
Weather; Cool, overcast with drizzle
We all pile out of our cars in the Putara Road end, putting on boots and surveying the map of where we are going and the lay of the land. We set off at a moderate pace along the river track heading towards our hill climb.
We negotiated the last swing bridge on our way towards the slanted tree staircase, which began our climb to the intersection. Once nearing the intersection and beyond it was our boots thrashing out in the muddy boggy track to the hut.
Reaching Herepai Hut in about 3 ½ hours (this was a slower trip) for lunch, we took all our wet, muddy boots off before entering the hut and just as we sat down for lunch the heavens opened up and down came the rain.
While the rain was beating down on the roof and we were munching away, all thoughts turned to are we going to walk back in the rain?
Also while munching we were talking about all the work that was carried out in the hut, what tracks led to other areas that can be accessed from this hut.
Lunch over and we were packing up and guess what ?
The rain stopped.
Rain was drizzling as we made our way back down to the road and that shower made the track a little bit more slippery and gave us more mud to add to the boots for cleaning that night once we were all at home.
All in all it was a good day, lots of fun and great company.
